gravemente

seriously

adverb grah-BEH-mehn-teh Rare

Also means

gravely

Usage Note

Gravemente derives from grave (serious, grave) and is used to intensify negative outcomes: gravemente herido ('seriously injured'), gravemente enfermo ('gravely ill'). It is a formal register word; in conversation, muy gravemente or simply muy mal might be used instead. Note that grave in Spanish does not mean 'a grave' (that is tumba).

Examples

"El conductor resultó gravemente herido en el accidente."

Natural Translation

The driver was seriously injured in the accident.
