Usage Note

Generador refers both to a machine that produces electricity and, abstractly, to anything that generates something (a generador de empleo = 'job creator'). In Spain and Latin America a portable petrol generator is commonly called simply el generador. The adjective form generador (una fuerza generadora) is also common.
