gasoil

diesel

noun gah-SOYL Rare

Origin: From English gas oil.

Usage Note

Gasoil (also spelled gasóil with an accent) is the standard Spanish term for diesel fuel, widely used in Spain. In Latin America diésel or gasoil both appear, with diésel increasingly dominant. It refers to the fuel itself, not the engine type; a diesel car is un coche diésel or un coche de gasóil.
