galaxia

galaxy

noun gah-LAHK-syah Rare

Origin: from Greek galaxías (milky), from gála (milk)

Usage Note

Galaxia is feminine. La Vía Láctea is the Spanish name for the Milky Way galaxy. The adjective galáctico is used both in astronomy and colloquially in Spain to describe something of an astronomically high cost or quality (un fichaje galáctico — a mega-money signing, famously applied to Real Madrid's star signings).

Examples

"Los astrónomos descubrieron una nueva galaxia con el telescopio."

Natural Translation

The astronomers discovered a new galaxy with the telescope.
