Fundamental is invariable in gender and is slightly more formal than básico or esencial. It frequently collocates with abstract nouns: derechos fundamentales (fundamental rights), cambio fundamental. The adverb is fundamentalmente and the verb fundamentar means to ground or base something on a foundation.
