fracasar

to fail; to fall through

verb frah-kah-SAHR Less Common

Usage Note

Fracasar is intransitive — it does not take a direct object. You say fracasó en su intento (he failed in his attempt), not fracasó el intento alone. The noun fracaso (failure) is frequently used alongside it. Learners sometimes try to use fallar in its place; fallar can mean to malfunction or to miss a target, while fracasar implies a complete, definitive collapse of a plan or project.

Examples

"El proyecto fracasó por falta de fondos."

Natural Translation

The project failed due to lack of funding.
