fin

end; purpose

noun FEEN Common

Origin: From Latin finis, 'boundary, end.'

Also means

weekend (in plural)

Usage Note

Fin has two core senses: temporal end (el fin del año, 'year's end') and purpose (con el fin de, 'in order to, for the purpose of'). The plural fines de semana means 'weekends.' Do not confuse with final (the very last moment or a sports final) — fin is more abstract, while final is more concrete. A fin de cuentas means 'after all, in the end.'

Examples

"Al fin llegaron las vacaciones."

Natural Translation

The vacation finally arrived.

Literal Translation

At-the end arrived the vacation.
