experimento

experiment

noun ehks-peh-ree-MEHN-toh Less Common

Origin: Latin 'experimentum' (a trial, a test)

Usage Note

Experimento is the noun; the related verb is experimentar (to experiment, or to experience/feel). A learner should note that experimentar also means 'to experience' (experimenté una sensación extraña = I experienced a strange feeling), so it is not strictly a false friend but has a broader range than English 'to experiment.'

Examples

"Los estudiantes hicieron un experimento en el laboratorio."

Natural Translation

The students did an experiment in the laboratory.
