Usage Note

Escorpión is one of two common words for scorpion in Spanish; the other is alacrán, which is more frequent in Mexico and Central America. Escorpión also names the Scorpio zodiac sign (el signo Escorpión). The noun is masculine despite ending in -ión: el escorpión, not la escorpión.
