Bestia is a feminine noun (una bestia enorme) even for a male animal. Applied to a person it is common gender — you hear both un bestia and una bestia. In informal speech it is often used admiringly of someone extraordinarily talented or strong — es una bestia en el gimnasio ('he's a beast at the gym').
