Usage Note

Escalar means to climb a mountain, wall, or other height, and also, figuratively, to scale up or to climb a hierarchy (escalar posiciones). The noun escalada means a climb or, in modern usage, an escalation of a conflict. The identical adjective escalar means 'scalar' in physics and maths, describing a magnitude with no direction (magnitud escalar).
