Erección covers both the anatomical sense (penile erection) and the architectural sense of 'erecting' or 'raising' a structure (la erección de un monumento). In formal writing the construction sense is common and not taboo. The anatomical sense is clinical in register; colloquial synonyms exist but erección is the standard medical term. The plural is erecciones.
