Usage Note

Encima indicates a position above or on the surface of something. It takes the preposition de when followed by a noun: encima de la mesa (on top of the table). The phrase por encima de means 'above' in a figurative sense: por encima de todo (above all). Do not confuse with arriba, which is a more general 'up' or 'upstairs.'
