Usage Note
Empeñado is the past participle of empeñar, used as an adjective meaning 'determined to do something' or, in a financial context, 'having pawned an item.' The expression estar empeñado en + infinitive means 'to be set on doing something.' In Latin America it can also mean indebted or broke.
