Eliminar means to remove something completely (eliminar un error, eliminar a un rival). In sports, eliminar specifically means to knock a team or player out of a tournament. The noun eliminación and adjective eliminatorio/a ('qualifying round') derive from it. It is stronger than quitar (to take away) and implies finality.
