Origin: From Latin districtus (restrained, jurisdiction), from distringere.

Usage Note

Distrito denotes an administrative subdivision, from city districts to the Distrito Federal (federal district) used in Mexico City (now officially Ciudad de México) and other capitals. In Spain, Madrid is divided into distritos which are in turn divided into barrios. It is always masculine.
