Dieciséis is written as a single fused word, as are diecisiete, dieciocho and diecinueve. The accent on the final e is obligatory to mark stress on the last syllable, which departs from the default penultimate-stress rule. Earlier orthography allowed the three-word form diez y seis, now considered archaic.
