Usage Note
Descubrimiento is used both for the act of discovering (el descubrimiento de América) and for the thing discovered itself (un descubrimiento científico = 'a scientific discovery'). The verb is descubrir; the person is descubridor/descubridora. Note the spelling: a u after the c in descu- (not desco-).
