Defender is an e→ie stem-changing verb (defiende, defiendo). It covers military defense, legal defense (defender al acusado), and advocating a position (defender una idea). The reflexive defenderse can mean 'to get by/manage' in informal speech: Me defiendo en inglés = 'I get by in English'.
