Cuñado is specifically a brother-in-law — either a spouse's brother or a sibling's husband. The feminine counterpart is cuñada (sister-in-law). In colloquial Spanish, el cuñado has become a cultural archetype for the know-it-all relative who holds strong opinions on every topic.
