baby

Usage Note

Criatura covers any living creature, but in colloquial Latin American and Spanish speech it is a very common affectionate term for a small child or baby, equivalent to 'little one.' In this baby sense it is also used in direct address: ¡pobrecita criatura! ('poor little thing!'). The verb criar (to raise, to rear) shares the root.
