corrupción

corruption

noun koh-rroop-SYOHN Less Common

Usage Note

Corrupción covers both moral/ethical corruption and political/financial corruption (corrupción política, corrupción de menores). It is one of the most frequent words in Spanish political journalism. The adjective corrupto/a and the verb corromper share the root. Note the double 'r' falls between vowels and is therefore a strong trill, not a soft tap.

Examples

"El escándalo de corrupción salió en las noticias."

Natural Translation

The corruption scandal made the news.
