Confrontación implies a direct, often hostile face-off between two parties — political, military, or interpersonal. Its plural confrontaciones is common in news reporting. The related verb is confrontar (to confront, to compare); note that in some contexts confrontar means 'to compare texts', not necessarily 'to clash'.
