Usage Note

Compartimento (also spelled compartimiento) is any enclosed section or division — compartimento de equipaje (luggage compartment), compartimento estanco (watertight compartment). The double spelling is accepted by the RAE; both forms are equally correct. The verb is compartir (to share), though the nouns are unrelated in meaning.
