Usage Note

Comercio means commerce or trade in the abstract, and also a physical shop or retail outlet in everyday speech. The phrase libre comercio (free trade) is standard in economics. In Spain, comercio is a common term for any small shop: los comercios del barrio (the neighbourhood shops). The adjective is comercial and the verb comerciar (to trade).
