Usage Note

Ciencia is used both for science in general (la ciencia moderna) and in the plural las ciencias for 'the sciences' as a school subject track, contrasted with las letras (humanities). Ciencia ficción (science fiction) is a common compound. The adjective científico also functions as a noun meaning 'scientist'.
