Usage Note

Champán (also spelled champaña in much of Latin America) refers to sparkling wine, often generically. The accent on the final syllable is required in Spanish to signal stress on a word ending in a consonant other than -n/-s. Strictly, only wine from France's Champagne region can be called champán; Spanish equivalents are cava or espumoso.
