ceder

to yield

verb seh-DEHR Less Common

Origin: From Latin cedere (to go, give way).

Also means

to hand over

Usage Note

Ceder means both 'to give way' (traffic: ceda el paso — yield) and 'to hand over' or 'to concede' (ceder terreno — to give ground). Ceder el paso is the standard road-sign phrase for 'yield/give way'. In negotiations it implies making a concession; in physics it can describe a structure 'giving way' under pressure. The noun cesión (transfer, cession) shares the same root.

Examples

"Tuvo que ceder ante las exigencias del cliente."
