Usage Note

Catedrático is the highest permanent academic rank in the Spanish university system, roughly equivalent to a full professor with a named chair (cátedra). The feminine is catedrática. Below it sits profesor titular and profesor asociado. In secondary education a catedrático de instituto is a senior civil-servant teacher who has passed a competitive state exam (oposición).
