casar

to marry

verb kah-SAHR Less Common

Origin: From Late Latin casare, 'to set up house'.

Also means

to match (colours)

Usage Note

Casar without a reflexive pronoun means 'to marry off' (a third person): el padre casó a su hija. The reflexive casarse is the everyday form meaning 'to get married': se casaron en junio. A secondary sense is to match or pair things that go together (ese color no casa con el otro = 'that colour doesn't go with the other one').

Examples

"Mis amigos se casaron el año pasado."

Natural Translation

My friends got married last year.

Literal Translation

My friends themselves married the year past
