caro

expensive

adjective KAH-roh Less Common

Also means

dear (beloved)

Usage Note

Caro is a clear false friend: in everyday Spanish it almost always means 'expensive' (ese coche es muy caro — that car is very expensive), not 'dear' in the affectionate sense, though the latter use survives in formal letters (estimado or querido are the standard terms of address). Barato is the direct antonym.

Examples

"Este restaurante es demasiado caro para nosotros."

Natural Translation

This restaurant is too expensive for us.
