carecer

to lack

verb kah-reh-SEHR Less Common

Usage Note

Carecer is always followed by de — you cannot say carecer algo, only carecer de algo (to lack something). It is a -zco verb: the first-person singular present is carezco. It is more formal than faltar, which is the everyday alternative (me falta dinero vs carezco de recursos).

Examples

"El proyecto carece de financiación suficiente."

Natural Translation

The project lacks sufficient funding.
