caldera

boiler

noun kahl-DEH-rah Rare

Origin: From Latin caldaria (hot-water vessel), from calidus (hot).

Also means

cauldron

Usage Note

Caldera covers a domestic or industrial boiler (caldera de gas), a large cauldron for cooking (la caldera de las brujas), and in geology a volcanic caldera. English borrowed the geological term directly. In Spain, caldera in a home refers to the central-heating boiler; in parts of Latin America, calentador is preferred for a water heater.

Examples

"Hay que revisar la caldera antes del invierno."

Natural Translation

The boiler needs to be checked before winter.
