Usage Note
Barrera is used both literally (a physical fence or rail) and figuratively for an obstacle or divide, as in barrera del idioma ('language barrier') or barrera de sonido ('sound barrier'). In bullfighting, la barrera is the wooden fence around the ring, and the front-row seats beside it are also called barrera; the common idiom ver los toros desde la barrera means to watch from a safe distance without getting involved.
