Bando has two distinct meanings: a side or faction in a conflict (el bando contrario, 'the opposing side') and an official public notice or edict issued by an authority (un bando municipal). The first sense is common in history, sports commentary, and fiction; the second is formal/legal. Do not confuse with banda (a band of music or a gang).
