azul

blue

adjective ah-SOOL Less Common

Origin: From Arabic lazaward, lapis lazuli (the stone).

Usage Note

Azul is invariable for gender (cielo azul, mar azul) and forms its plural by adding -es (ojos azules). The Arabic origin came via the gemstone lapis lazuli, making it one of the relatively rare Arabic-derived color words in Spanish. Shades include azul claro (light blue), azul marino (navy blue), and azul cielo (sky blue).

Examples

"Lleva una camisa azul muy bonita."

Natural Translation

He is wearing a very nice blue shirt.
