Aventajar means to get ahead of or outdo someone, often in a competition or ranking: le aventaja en velocidad (she surpasses him in speed). It is a regular -ar verb. The related noun ventaja (advantage) shares the same root; aventajado (adjective) means gifted or ahead of one's peers.
