Usage Note
Atrever is almost always used reflexively: atreverse a + infinitive (to dare to do something). No me atrevo means 'I don't dare'. It is a regular -er verb in all forms. Do not confuse with atravesar (to cross/traverse), which looks and sounds similar.

Natural Translation
He didn't dare tell the truth.
