arma

weapon

noun AHR-mah Common

Also means

arm

Usage Note

Arma is feminine but takes the masculine article in the singular — el arma — because it begins with a stressed a, following the same rule as el agua and el hacha. In the plural it reverts to feminine: las armas. Las armas also means 'coats of arms' in heraldry. The phrase arma de doble filo ('double-edged sword') is a common idiom for something with pros and cons.
