aproximar

to approach, to bring closer

verb ah-prohk-see-MAHR Rare

Usage Note

Aproximar is often used reflexively as aproximarse (to draw near, to approach), which is more common than the transitive form. Aproximarse a la verdad means to come close to the truth. The related adjective aproximado means 'approximate', and aproximadamente (approximately) is its adverb — note that aproximar and 'approximate' share roots but the verb primarily means 'to approach' not 'to estimate'.

Examples

"El tren se aproxima a la estación."

Natural Translation

The train is approaching the station.
