Origin: From Latin antarcticus, from Greek antarktikos (opposite the Arctic).

Usage Note

Antártico describes anything relating to Antarctica or the South Pole region: el Océano Antártico, la expedición antártica. The feminine form is antártica. Note the stress on the second syllable — it is an esdrújula word. The noun la Antártida names the continent.
