Usage Note

Ampliar has a written accent on the i throughout the present tense to prevent a diphthong (amplío, amplías, amplía, amplían), even though the infinitive has no accent. It is used for expanding a business, enlarging a photograph, or extending a deadline (ampliar el plazo). The adjective is amplio (wide, broad).
