aleación

alloy

noun ah-leh-ah-SYOHN Rare

Usage Note

Aleación is the mixture of two or more metals (or a metal and a non-metal) fused together — acero (steel) is an aleación of iron and carbon. The verb is alear (to alloy/blend metals). Do not confuse aleación with mezcla (a general mixture) or combinación; aleación is specific to metallurgy. The plural aleaciones follows the regular pattern for -ción nouns.

Examples

"El bronce es una aleación de cobre y estaño."

Natural Translation

Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin.
