agotar

to exhaust

verb ah-goh-TAHR Less Common

Also means

to drain

Usage Note

Agotar means to use up completely — stock, patience, or energy. The reflexive agotarse means to become exhausted or to sell out: las entradas se agotaron ('the tickets sold out'). Agotado as an adjective means both 'sold out' and 'exhausted', which can occasionally cause ambiguity.

Examples

"El trabajo me agota completamente."

Natural Translation

The work exhausts me completely.
