ópera
opera
noun OH-peh-rah Less Common
Origin: From Italian opera (work), itself from Latin opus.
Usage Note
Ópera carries a written accent on the first syllable because it is an esdrújula (stress on the antepenultimate syllable). The word is borrowed from Italian; ir a la ópera (to go to the opera) treats the genre and the venue identically, just as in English. Ópera bufa and ópera seria are the two classic Italian subgenres.
Examples
"Esta noche van a la ópera."
Natural Translation
Tonight they are going to the opera.
