walkman
personal stereo
noun WOHK-mahn Rare
Origin: Brand name from Sony (English: walk + man)
Usage Note
Walkman entered Spanish as a genericised brand name for any portable cassette player, much as kleenex did for tissues. In modern usage it sounds dated, replaced by reproductor de MP3 or simply auriculares (earphones) in everyday speech. The RAE accepts it with masculine gender; the plural is walkmans in Spanish usage.
Examples
"Escuchaba música con su walkman en el autobús."
Natural Translation
He listened to music with his personal stereo on the bus.
