Usage Note

Viuda is the feminine form; the masculine is viudo ('widower'). Both can also function as adjectives — quedarse viudo/a means 'to be widowed'. A notable false friend trap: viuda negra is the black widow spider. The diminutive viudita appears in the folk song La viudita del conde Laurel.
