vida

life

noun BEE-dah Common

Usage Note

Vida is feminine and covers life in the broadest sense — biological, biographical, and idiomatic. Ganarse la vida means 'to earn a living'; dar vida a means 'to bring to life'. The exclamation ¡mi vida! is a term of endearment. Unlike English, Spanish does not need an article in abstract generalisations: la vida es corta (life is short).

Examples

"La vida en el campo es tranquila."

Natural Translation

Life in the countryside is peaceful.
