Usage Note

Ventral is the anatomical term for the belly or underside — the surface of an animal or body part facing downward or forward. It is the opposite of dorsal. In human anatomy it refers to the front (anterior) surface. The term appears in biology, zoology, and medical texts, and is rarely used in everyday speech.
