Usage Note
Velar has two main uses: velar por ('to watch over, safeguard': velar por los intereses del cliente) and the literal 'to hold a wake over a deceased person' (velar a un difunto). As a reflexive velarse it refers to a photographic plate or film being exposed accidentally. The adjective velado means 'veiled' or 'muffled'.
